Orchards Community Church

The 'What' and 'Why" of Church Membership

A church is a network of relationships between people that grows out of a foundational relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. At Orchards Community Church this network of relationships is based on three factors we share in common:

1. A COMMON FAITH: We receive into membership those who love the Lord Jesus Christ, have personally received Him as Savior, and have publicly declared their faith as a believer by being baptized.
2. COMMON BELIEFS: While there are some matters upon which we “agree to disagree”, there are certain core beliefs to which we are deeply committed. These core beliefs are found in our “Belief Statement” included in this pamphlet.
3. A COMMON VISION: The Mission of Orchards Community Church is to make spiritually seeking people into fully devoted followers of Christ. Together we strive to provide teaching, care, and support to grow as disciples of Christ.

Though the Bible makes it clear that every true believer in Christ is a member of the Church, we also see the value for a person to identify with a local body of Christ-followers more officially identify with a local body of Christ-followers. At Orchards, church membership is a formal relational commitment to others in the Body, lived out through:

1. MUTUAL CARE: The “new” commandment Jesus gave us is to love one another. This is the role and responsibility of every believer and our best opportunity to be a corporate witness of the gospel to the watching world.
2. MUTUAL PRESENCE: This just refers to the importance of members to be "present” for worship services and other opportunities in both large and small group ministries of the church.
3. MUTUAL PARTICIPATION: “Ministry” is not just the job of the pastors, staff, and leaders. All believers have been uniquely gifted by God to be used by Him to minister to one another.
4. MUTUAL CONTRIBUTION: We are not ashamed to challenge and encourage people to freely and sacrificially give of their finances, time, and energy so that God will accomplish all that He wants to do through Orchards’ ministry.
5. MUTUAL COMMUNICATION: This is a constant challenge, but so important in any relationship: communicating with one another about information, opportunities, and most importantly, what’s going on in the ministry and our lives.
6. MUTUAL ACCOUNTABILITY: Our desire to proclaim the life-changing gospel begins with living a life that brings honor to Jesus Christ through the power of God’s Spirit as a testimony to the world around us. Church membership is an important way to hold each other accountable for how we live that out.

Belief Statement

We Believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible authoritative Word of God.

We Believe that there is one God, eternally coexistent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We Believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, His personal and imminent return for the Church, and His glorious appearing with the Church to set up His Kingdom.

We Believe that the Holy Spirit is a person, co-equal with the Father and the Son in all his attributes, sent by the Lord Jesus Christ from the Father to convict the world of sin, to regenerate, indwell, guide, and teach the believer, and to empower him to live a godly life in victory over sin.

We Believe that Jesus Christ died a substitutionary death upon the cross, by grace providing salvation for all who believe in Him, justifying them on the basis of His shed blood.

We Believe that all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith as their personal Savior become the children of God, and by that step of faith eternal life is assured.

We Believe in the resurrection of the saved and the lost. The saved are resurrected unto life eternal and the lost are resurrected unto eternal condemnation.

We Believe in the reality and personality of Satan, a subtle being who ultimately will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

We Believe in the spiritual unity of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.
